Theme Leaders help the Seafood CRC's Program Managers to plan and review projects and help deliver outcomes and outputs.

Higher Education Dynamic Duo

Theme Leader 1 - Education and Training (Higher Education)

Associate Professor Tom Ross has extensive experience in teaching and student supervision in the University of Tasmania, School of Agricultural Sciences, has published approximately 80 scientific papers and book chapters and has supervised or co-supervised 14 PhD and MSc graduates making him the perfect Theme Leader!

Tom's credentials in an Oyster shell:

  • Deputy Director of the Australian Food Safety Centre of Excellence, a joint venture from 2003 to 2007 between the University of Tasmania and Food Science Australia under the National Food Industry Strategy.  He was also the Manager of the Centre’s Education Program, including development of on-line training units, and the Centre’s post-graduate program.
  • Current post-graduate coordinator for the Food Safety Centre.
  • Awarded the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 University of Tasmania, Teaching Merit Certificate.
  • Served on both Australian and international expert food safety committees and currently collaborates in national and international food safety research projects and committees.

Theme Leader 2 - Education and Training (Higher Education)

Professor Mark Tamplin is the Director of the Tasmanian Institute for Agricultural Research Food Safety Centre and over his career he has supervised 31 PhD and MSc completions.  Currently, he supervises two CRC PhD students and two Honours students.

As well as receiving numerous awards such as gold medallist for Achievement for Outstanding Public Health, outstanding researcher award for the United States Food and Drug Administration and the Sigma XI research award, Mark has collectively secured research funding in excess of USD$11.4 million dollars.

Mark's role is to provide 'back up support' for Tom Ross.

Theme Leader - Education and Training (Industry Skills Development)

Roy Palmer is super passionate about industry training and so the Australian Seafood Cooperative Research is proud to have him as Theme Leader for Program 3 (Education and Training - Industry Skills Development).

As Chairman of the Australian Fish Names Committee, Roy and his team were responsible for getting the Australian Fish Names Standards recognised as an official standard in Australia. This was by no means an easy task.

Roy also has extensive experience in the Australian seafood industry having undertaken positions in exporting, importing and trading, retail, processing and wholesale.

Roy's credentials in an oyster shell:

• Has qualifications such as GAICD, DipSI (SP) and Certificate IV in Training & Assessment

• Is the Director of Tigrey Pty Ltd (trading as Fishy Business)

• Is the Director of The International Association of Fish Inspectors

• Seafood Experience Australia Ltd and the
Agri-Food Industry Skills Council

• Was awarded with "It’s an Honour" - Awards and National Symbols Branch Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Inaugural National Seafood Training Award and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation Award for leadership and commitment to achieving
excellence in the Australian seafood industry.
