The Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre has 3 Honours projects with 3 students enrolled.

Understanding the Role of Kiss/Kiss1r System in Controlling Puberty in Yellowtail Kingfish and Southern Bluefin Tuna

  • Project Number - 2008/785
  • Honours Student - Ms Ying Ying Lee
  • Student Affiliation - University of the Sunshine Coast
  • Supervisor - Professor Abigail Elizur

About the Project

The overall aim of the project is to isolate and characterize the Kiss1 receptor in Southern Bluefin Tuna and Yellowtail Kingfish. This will facilitate identification of active kisspetins and their analogues as well provide the first step towards understanding
its expression during reproductive development.

The KiSS1 receptor, together with its ligand, kisspeptin, are considered the gatekeepers of puberty and success of the project would help to develop strategies to advance puberty in Southern Bluefin Tuna, so that the time required for holding the broodstock will be shortened.

Knowledge gained from the project would also contribute to facilitating strategies to manage pubertal development in Yellowtail Kingfish for commercial advantage.

Evaluation of a Saline Water Caldoceran (Daphniopsis australis) as New Live Food for Fish Larvae

  • Project Number - 2008/786
  • Honours Student - Mr Matthew Osborne
  • Student Affiliation - Flinders University
  • Supervisor - Dr Jian Qin

About the Project

This research aims to test the growth performance of Yellowtail Kingfish larvae with a saline water cladoceran species (D. australis) versus Artemia nauppii and quantify the nutritional profile of this new live food species and understand how its nutrition factors are transferred to fish larvae. The appropriate use of live food species will help hatcheries to overcome problems of nutritional deficiency and poor larval quality in larval fish rearing.

Novel Products from Blue Swimmer Crabs

  • Project Number - 2008/787
  • Honours Student - Ms Kerri Choo
  • Student Affiliation - Curtin University
  • Supervisor - Dr Hannah Williams

About the Project

Abacus Fisheries is a progressive, regional company specialising in the production and processing of Blue Swimmer Crabs. The company has developed techniques for extracting crab meat in large pieces for the fine dining market and extracting the balance of the meat from the carcass as a paste for further
processing.

The aim of this Honours project is to develop from the paste a novel new product. This will involve extensive product development work along with consumer acceptability trials and development of full HACCP-based processing protocols for its production in the Abacus Fisheries processing facilities.
