Annual Prawn and Barramundi Conference 2007 The Annual Prawn and Barramundi Conference was held between the 25th - 26th July 2007 in Brisbane, Queensland. The conference was an outstanding success with an excellent assortment of delegates and a wide variety of Australian and international speakers. More than 40 speakers covered subjects ranging from developing an industry-wide environmental plan and the Sydney Fish Market's new direction in meeting consumer demands, to temperature effects on protein synthesis in Barramundi and the potential for triploid induction in Tiger Prawns. Keynote speakers were US-trained expert in aquaculture nutrition Dr Jacques Gabaudan, from Thailand and UK trained international aquaculture consultant Dr Matthew Briggs. The Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre had an exhibition stand as a means to introducing ourselves to our industry participants in these two sectors and Dr Len Stephens, our Managing Director spoke about the Cooperative Research Centre and our research directions. ____________________________________________________ |

During September 2007, Jayne Gallagher (the Australian Seafood CRC's Programs Manager, attendance paid by Seafood Services Australia) and Roy Palmer (Seafood Cooperative Research Centre's Industry Training Education and Program Leader, attendance paid by Tigrey Pty Ltd) attended the World Seafood Congress in Dublin, Ireland where they discovered lots of opportunities for the Centre. After the welcome speeches by Ms Mary Coughlan T.D (Minister for Agriculture Fisheries and Food for Ireland), Dr Grimur Valdimarsson (FAO) and key speaker, Dr Michael Crawford, Director of The Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition in London, set the tone of the Congress with a talk about why the oceans of the world need to be agriculturised. Another important theme that came through the Congress was that of sustainable development and the focus was on the giant supermarket chain’s desires. Australians speaking at the event were Dr Steve Kennelly, Mark Boulter (Sydney Fish Market) and Roy Palmer. Other CRC people seen at the Congress were Bryan Skepper (Sydney Fish Market) and Dr Graham Mair (Seafood CRC Program Leader 1A). Jayne, Graham and Roy had meetings with a number of organisations regarding the Seafood CRC and it is expected that collaboration with European Union businesses will be established in 2008. _____________________________________________________ |

From the 30th October to the 1st November 2007, the Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre's staff and Program Managers, the CRC Board and a large number of participants attended the Seafood Directions Conference in Hobart, Tasmania. The conference focused around the themes of "climate change, co-management, people in industry, environmental accreditation and changing markets". For the Seafood Cooperative Research Centre, it was a very valuable time to meet a large number of researchers and industry people working within our core and supporting participant organisations. Emily also organised a trade stand, which served as a point for people to come and meet us and find out further information. A number of our participants also spoke at the conference with those being Matt Muggleton, Development Manager from Southern Rocklobster Limited and Gus Dannoun, Supply Manager, Sydney Fish Market. ____________________________________________________ |

2008 European Seafood Exposition Three Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre staff members, a large number of industry participants and two Seafood Cooperative Research Centre industry bursary holders attended the European Seafood Expsoition in Brussels. With 80 countries (1700 companies) participating in the trade event and over 10 exhibiting halls (and just under 30,000 people from 150 countries visiting the conference), the three days of the event feels like a whirlwind of activity. As usual the Australian Pavilion did well and those exhibiting were happy with the business achieved and the prospects for the future. ____________________________________________________ |

2008 Skretting Australasia Aquaculture Conference The Seafood Cooperative Research Centre staff, theme leaders and Participants all attended the 2008 Skretting Australasian Aquaculture Conference in Brisbane from the 3rd August - 6th August 2008. The four days consisted of many interactive and stimulating sessions with social events held in the evening. Seafood Cooperative Research Centre staff and participants used the time to also organise meetings and project development sessions. During the conference, the Seafood Cooperative Research Centre also held a private, welcome dinner for a number of important international guests. These guests were:

4th Australian Abalone Convention A number of Seafood Cooperative Research Centre staff, Theme Leaders and industry participants attended this convention from the 17th - 19th September 2008 in Port Lincoln. The convention featured key note addresses from international and national speakers, sessions that featured key industry issues (such as resource management, bio-security, markets, code of practices, product development and dive health and safety) as well as a full social program with a trade show and poster session. The Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre held a session at the convention to discuss projects and strategic development of projects. ____________________________________________________ |

2009 Cooperative Research Centres Conference This Annual Conference is convened toward the end of May 2009 and each year is held in a different city across the country. In 2009 it was held in Canberra. The conference was an ideal opportunity for researchers, educators and industry people to network with other Cooperative Research Centres while gaining valuable insights regarding the nature of cooperative research ventures. The Chairman of the Board and the Managing Director attended this conference on behalf of the CRC staff. ____________________________________________________ |

2009 6th National Rocklobster CongressThe CRC was heavily involved in this congress which was held in Adelaide from the 15th - 16th September 2009.The Seafood CRC sponsored a session called "Making Producer Funded Market Development Work for You" which focused on our Managing Director Dr Len Stephens' experience with his time on the Boards of Meat, Wool and Dairy. Here he provided the audience with practical aspects of administration and funding, getting the politics right, outlining what works and what doesn't and why and how to get started._____________________________________________________ |

On the 30th November until the 2nd December, Clean Seas Tuna and the Seafood CRC hosted the 2nd Global Centre of Excellence Tuna Symposium with Kinki University in Japan. The purpose of the symposium was to share knowledge about the science of the propagation of Southern Bluefin, Northern Bluefin, Yellowfin and Big Eye Tuna in Panama, Indonesia, Europe, USa and Australia. Delegates attended from Australia, USA, Japan, Italy and Europe. This exciting Symposium was supported by research funding from the Japanese Government, Clean Seas Tuna Australia and the Seafood CRC. _____________________________________________________ |
