Australian Wild Prawn Research and Development Planning, Implementation, Extension and Utilisation

  • Project Number - 2008/748
  • Start Date - 1st September 2008
  • End Date - 30th December 2011
  • Principal Investigator - Mr Martin Hicks
  • CRC Participant End User - Australian Council of Prawn Fisheries

About the Project

The Australian Prawn wild catch sector has had significant decline with the financial crisis worsening in the last 12 months.  The industry comprises of more than 1000 small businesses throughout Australia with little or no capacity to coordinate investment in and manage industry development.  Recovering lost industry value and delivering future growth is contingent upon coordinated investment in industry development at the whole of industry level.

The Australian Council of Prawn Fisheries is now established and well positioned with the Seafood Cooperative Research Centre to implement its strategic plan and to integrate research and development across all stakeholders under its leadership.

Project Objectives

1. To coordinate the planning, implementation, and reporting of research and development projects conducted by the Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre to achieve the outcomes specified in the Australian Council of Prawn Fisheries' Strategic Plan.

2. To facilitate the prawn industry participation in Seafood Cooperative Research Centre projects and the extension and utilisation of the project results, particularly in relation to the development of new products and new markets.

3. To establish, by December 2011, a mechanism by which the Australian Council of Prawn Fisheries can fund its own research and development coordination and communication activities.

A Business Plan for the Australian Barramundi Industry

  • Project Number - 2008/751
  • Start Date - 9th July 2008
  • End Date - 25th July 2008
  • Principal Investigator - Mr Graham Dalton
  • CRC Research Participant End User - Aust Barramundi Farmers

A business plan is needed to define the priorities and allocate the financial and human resources available to the Australian Barramundi Farmers Association. The business plan will also enable budgets to be set and industry development to be undertaken with a reasonable consideration of what is achievable.

Perhaps most importanlty for a management plan. this will identify what is not going to be attempted. The industry and Association will be able to focus its efforts on what can be achieved. It will ensure resources are allocated efficiently and effectively.

Project Objectives

1. The development of a business plan, agreed by the Association and key industry stakeholders, that identifies the key strategic priorities to be achieved in the next three years, allocates responsibilties for managing the plan and identifies the financial and other resources required.

Review for the Australian Oyster Consortium on their Strategic Market Direction

  • Project Number - 2008/753
  • Start Date - 1st August 2008
  • End Date - 30th August 2008
  • Principal Investigator - Mr Ewan Colquhuon
  • CRC Research Participant End User - The Oyster Consortium

About the Project

The Oyster Consortium is in danger of making market investment decisions without agreed strategy or, stalled by indecision, making an insignificant investment to ensure a profitable marketplace on completion of the CRC.

The Consortium needs an agreed document, collating all work undertaken onconsumer trends and expectations, that guides its investment within the marketing area. It also needs a strategic direction for the industry.

Project Objectives

1. Accept a documented summary of consumer expectations from which to guide investment.

2. Form views on industry needs and strategies that enable the industry to meet those expectations.

3. Preliminary input into the Business Plan and resolution on financial contribution into relevant CRC projects

Australian Oyster Industry Business Plan

  • Project Number - 2008/798
  • Start Date - 18th February 2009
  • End Date - 30th October 2009
  • Principal Investigator - Dr John Carragher
  • Research Provider - SA Research and Development Institute
  • CRC Research Participant End User - CRC Oyster Consortium

About the Project

The project aims to resolve a lack of direction for the oyster industry’s research and development investment and provide direction for the industry’s growth.

In order to construct this it is essential to examine: market development, production efficiencies, supply chain management, environmental sustainability, community perception, industry structure, human capital, regulatory environment and financial performance.

The overarching objective is to facilitate industry growth, value and increase farm profitability, hence the reason for a Business Plan rather than a strategic plan.

Project Objectives

1. Create a five year Business Plan, encompassing Sydney Rock and Pacific Oysters in all Oyster producing states, containing a series of national prioritised strategies and objectives in each of the key areas: Market development, Production efficiencies, Supply chain management, Environmental sustainability, Community perception, Industry structure, Human capital, Regulatory environment and Financial performance.

2. Recommend actions to each of the prioritized strategies within the business plan to provide direction to facilitate industry growth, value and increase farm profitability through the 5 year Business Plan.

3. Recommend and prioritise actions for industry R & D, policy and advocacy work through the five year Business Plan
